D.) Blindness History Basics: History of Braille Writers | APH.org | April 24, 2024
When fifteen-year-old Louis Braille presented his tactile system of raised dots in 1824, he hoped the new system would provide a simpler path to literacy for blind people; an easier way to read and write. The dot system named after Louis proved an immensely successful tool, enabling people using braille to read as quickly as print readers. The system also offered the most effective writing method known for people who are blind or low vision. In Louis’ day, writing was slow and laborious compared to today, whether you used paper and pen or his new dot system. The young inventor could not have envisioned the machines and technology that would, eventually, create tools to help his system of six dots transform communication for people who are blind or low vision.

19.) Prioritizing Accessibility And Inclusion In AI Development | Oludolapo Makinde | Forbes.com | April 30, 2024
As the use of artificial intelligence (AI) continues to be more prolific in our society, its potential to either perpetuate or mitigate social inequities comes sharply into focus. This understanding raises a pressing question posed by Lawrence Weru, a Biomedical Informatics Associate at Harvard Medical School: “If we’re creating tools that are fed with information that can bias against certain groups, and we integrate those into very crucial aspects of our lives, what’s going to be the impact of that?”

24.) City Websites Will Be Required to Meet ADA Accessibility Standards | LMC.org | April 29, 2024
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has been around about as long as the internet. But until recently, the rules surrounding the ADA and access to technology were less clear. The new rule, signed by the United States Attorney General on April 8, adopts a technical standard for web and mobile accessibility to ensure that people with disabilities can better access important public services. For most cities, this will require significant upgrades to websites, including those you may use with third parties for credit card processing, reservations, or other online service features. The exceptions to the rules are mostly surrounding content posted before the effective dates. The size of the city or the cost to make the upgrades will not generally be defendable reasons for not complying with the rules.

A special device for people who are blind or low vision, bioptic lenses are a regular set of glasses with a telescope at the top that you can look into to see signs, stop lights, or anything else that you need to view more clearly or closely. Typically, the scope is mounted on the right or left side, depending on which eye has better vision. Some people have scopes on both sides. Using bioptic glasses allows a legally blind or low vision driver to operate a motor vehicle. This is called bioptic driving.

May 21, 2024 | What AI Can Do For (and To) Web Accessibility | TPGi
9AM PT, 10AM MT, 11AM CT, 12PM ET, 4PM GMT
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has once again become a hot topic due to the permeation of AI-powered language models such as ChatGPT in the public discourse and professional services. But what can it do to enhance web accessibility? More importantly, what harm can it do to it? Is it the prophesied end-all accessibility solution that will put us all out of work? Can a developer who knows nothing about accessibility still create accessible web content using AI? This presentation explores the dual role that Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning (AI/ML) plays when it comes to web accessibility. On the one hand, it can be a powerful aid for people with disabilities, enabling dynamic content adaptation, offering voice navigation, and providing automated descriptions for inaccessible images and videos. On the other hand, removing the human aspect from accessible web-design tasks can easily lead to harder-to-discover accessibility obstacles. Our talk highlights the potential influences of AI/ML on web content for its developers, accessibility professionals, and people with disabilities. Through practical examples, we’ll illustrate the good, the bad, and the ugly that AI has to offer web accessibility as we attempt to answer the question: Is there room for AI in A11Y?

About: Barrier-Free Canada/Canada Sans Barrieres (BFC/CSB) advocates for the Canadian Parliament to enact a strong and effective Canadians with Disabilities Act (CDA) to achieve a barrier-free Canada for all persons with disabilities.
To this end, BFC/CSB is seeking endorsements from national disability organizations to build a non-partisan community coalition. BFC/CSB would also like to identify point persons from these organizations to act as key contacts.
The steering committee of BFC/CSB has drafted a set of principles concerning a CDA that are drawn from the principles that underpin the provincial disability legislation in Ontario and Manitoba. A CDA is not meant to replace provincial disability legislation. It will complement such legislation and benefit Canadians living in provinces with and without provincial disability legislation. At this point in time, CNIB, March of Dimes Canada, Canadian Hearing Society and MS Society of Canada have endorsed the BFC/CSB principles and confirmed their support for the movement to enact a CDA. There is no individual or organizational charge for membership in BFC/CSB.

There is a better way to get accurate and complete information every time. So you can reduce stress and gain independence.
